"At present it is said there are approximately 1200 works of traditional art and crafts in Japan and almost 70% of these were made by local independents each employing fewer than 30 people. Arts and crafts produced by small scale production centres are supported by the local people and the local landscape but as their output is small there are not many opportunities to share their works with the wider populace. Further, the numbers of people inheriting the old skills and techniques are dwindling so the very existence of some of the traditional crafts is in real danger. It can be said that the works themselves are endangered species"
